About the event

BAACG is pleased to offer this very special opportunity to our members and the wider Conservation and Collections communities. Organized by plastic specialists Olivia van Rooijen & Carien van Aubel, the Plastic Identification Workshop is an extremely popular course that is very rarely taught outside of Europe. Developed for anyone working closely with art collections containing plastics, the workshop will teach participants to categorize as many plastic objects as possible with the Plastic Identification Tool, so they can return to their institutions or clients and perform independent identifications in the future.

During the first two days of the workshop, different types of plastics will be showcased, and the instructor will explain how to use both the digital Plastic Identification Tool and the (optional) Plastics ID Toolkit**, a kit containing physical testing materials and reference samples. Participants will receive in-depth information concerning different plastics and their specific characteristics. Attendees will examine a number of objects to identify any plastics present therein.

On the third day, the knowledge gained will be further put in practice with a hands-on survey of objects in the extensive and diverse collections of History San Jose. This day is optional but recommended. No refund is available for those who choose not to stay for the third day.

**Purchase of a Toolkit is optional. Please visit https://www.vanaubelvanrooijen.com/toolkit to learn more and for a link to pre-order the kit, which costs 600 Euros, approximately $650.00.  BAACG intends to have a toolkit to rent out to local conservators and collections for a nominal fee after the workshop, but this is not guaranteed.

Registration opens for BAACG members ONLY on 7/23/24.  Registration opens for the wider community on 7/31/24. Non-members registering before 7/31 will be waitlisted until joining/renewing and may lose their spot. Registrants who do not pay their invoice promptly may also be moved to the waitlist.
