About the event

Museum conservators and private practicioners are increasingly being asked to eliminate insect infestations in the cultural artifacts and artworks in their care. A popular, non-toxic, eco-friendly solution is anoxia. Anoxia involves depriving insect pests of oxygen by replacing the air surrounding the objects with inert gases like nitrogen or argon. The resulting low-oxygen environment effectively eliminates insect pests in all life stages without harming the objects or the environment. This method is especially valuable for treating fragile or sensitive collections where other solutions such as freezing may be problematic.

Searching for a relatively affordable, long-term, high-capacity anoxia solution for a private client, BAACG Board President Candis Griggs came across the Portuguese company EXPM a few years ago and has been consistently impressed with their technology, commitment, and customer service. Because of this positive experience, we have invited them to speak to our guild members and other interested colleagues.

Please join us at a lunchtime zoom (date and time TBD soon) to hear EXPM Representative, Conservator Vânia Assis, describe the company's many anoxia solutions including nitrogen-generators, portable soft chambers, custom hard chambers, and clear bubble kits. The speaker will illustrate these solutions with case studies from their archive, library, and museum clients in Europe, Asia, and the Middle East. Time permitting, participants can also learn about the other solutions EXPM offers, including setting up and staffing short-term and permanent Conservation Laboratories.
