BAACG Stained Glass Cocktail Hour

Pour yourself a cocktail from the comfort of home and join us for an informative presentation by heralded stained glass conservator Ariana Makau as she describes her company Nzilani's recently completed treatment of a stained glass dome. The 118-year-old, inverted stained glass dome was in critical condition. Time and previous improper repairs had made the ten-foot diameter structure unsafe, requiring immediate conservation to save it. The uncommon inverted orientation of the dome required the team to come up with innovative new methods to return the dome to its original state, plus re-engineering of the structural support system. The restoration team spearheaded by Nzilani involved: engineers, architectural metal-smiths and historians, free-standing scaffolding and of course a highly trained stained-glass crew. Nzilani’s exemplary preservation of the dome has been recognized with a 2020 Preservation Design Award for Craftsmanship/Preservation Technology, one of only eighteen awards given statewide this year.
